Initial Complaint:

Okay see if you can hold on for all of this . . .

In November of 2001 we had a customer come to us to use our marriage agency (IRENA Wife Search). He met Elena from our site and was writing to her. She appeared to be the sweetest woman ever and they were a great match. We had met her many times in person and spoken with her in depth about her and Duane writing each other. We loved her. After about 2-months Duane plans a visit to Sumy, Ukraine to see her and her family. He would arrive just in time for the New Year. They made plans and as you can imagine and Duane came to us to send some pre-New Years gifts to them. Of course we did and my mother in law, per Duane's approval, called Elena and tells her that Duane has offered to buy her a new dress, shoes and purse to celebrate the New Year in, and that she would take her shopping to get whatever she might like. They went out several times until they found the perfect dress. The whole gift about $100US. Then Duane even requested gifts for her parents knowing that the father had not been paid in months. (Duane is a great man by the way, very thoughtful :)

Oh, before all of this, of course Duane has sent flowers on an occasion and generally does all the nice things that the lovely women from Ukraine love about men from the US and Europe. Nothing too extravagant, just nice.

Before Duane's actual departure date he speaks with us on the phone and talks about possibly leaving a small amount of money behind after his trip for the family. He knows again the father has been unpaid for months and there is no heat in the apartment. We agree that he should wait to decide about this towards the end of his trip. We offer to deliver money to them after he leaves even if he decides it is something he wants to do. Remember never even consider sending money to a woman you have not met in person. And even then use caustion.

You have to know that up to this point everything was wonderful between them both. Amazing even! [Duane's words not even ours].

He arrives spends just about a full week and returns home. I called him once while he was there to see how everything was and he was ecstatic. Said everything was beyond description it was so nice. I asked him to call me when he gets back from his trip because of course my wife and I want to hear it all :)

Duane calls and send pictures via email. He had an incredible time and says she was better then her letters and even more beautiful. Now I know Duane would blush to read this but he is a very intelligent, relaxed and easy going man. He has a very level head on his shoulders about this process and what may or may not be possible. Truly one of our nicest customers.

Now the next part explains why I've added Elena to this page. Although I do not believe her original intent was to steal money from Duane or us it has come to this.

So here we go . . .

After Duane returned home from his trip I sent him an email and asked if he was still considering sending a small amount of money and if he needed us to do it for him. He replied that actually he did that when he was there. Everything was so wonderful that he wanted to present it to her while he was there. He later gave her the money and said to her "for Elena, Papa and Mama". He had gotten the money from a Money Machine in town while walking with Elena and her Father and made a withdrawal of 1500 grivans (about $283US).

Well next we call Elena because as you can image we want to hear her excitement abouts Duane's visiting and to start patting ourselves on the back for helping two great people meet and most likely marry some day. Well as my wife Irena makes the call she says nothing from the start of the call until about 10 minutes into it. And the look on her face is NOT good. Well it seems according to Elena, Duane is nothing like his letters. Irena asked her to explain. From that point on it was nothing but nonsense. She complained about a hole she saw in a pair of his socks and that she didn't like his clothes. What?! We asked her to send Duane a letter explaining everything. While we waited for her letter I called Duane. We were both so very confused! He said not only was the trip great but she told him how very lonely she would be when he was gone. She made him promise to write as soon as he got home, which he did and a very wonderful letter. He even spoke with her twice on the phone before our shocking call I described above. All the while she was very nice and warm with him on the phone

At this point Elena is telling us she wants no further contact with Duane at all. When Irena, I and Duane read her response and reasons there where no valid reasons at all. Again she complained about a hole in his socks and other insignificant issues and not even many. It sounded like a little girl trying to blame her little brother fro something bad that happened.

(Sorry I know this is endless but it gets even more irritating . . .)

The next point is Duane did not even mention to us trying to get his money back that he left her. He never even mentioned it. But as you can imagine Irena and I were very upset and asked if he would mind if we tried to. He said of course but he doubted he would see it OR the Russian/English electronic dictionary he left behind.

We called and politely mentioned that we would need to pick up the money and items that were left behind since Duane would not be returning. Elena said the only money he left was about $20US and nothing else. We explained he told us about going to the money machine and giving her 1500 grivan (283US). He even gave us specific directions on how they got there to this side street with the money machine on it. She denied it and said he was lying and that he never left the translator either. That's when the screaming and crying started.

Well funny thing about those money machines - they give you receipts!!!!! Duane emailed us a copy per my request.

An honorable mention to this story was during Duane's visit Elena and her family said some very upsetting things about our agency and that we were charging more for the gifts than we had to pay for them and that we were stealing money from him. Duane was confused and said you don't expect a business to sell things for what they pay for them do you? They need to make a reasonable profit to pay their bills and for their time and effort. You see the great thing is Duane and I have become very good friends and he knows as well as I do what we pay for items and how much he is paying. He laughs about this reference as do we but it is still upsetting to have someone you are trying to help basically call you a thief.

So at this point Duane has lost $283, an electronic translator (about $180US) and a shirt or two he left behind. But it's not over. Now how we IRENA Wife Search are being 'squeezed' by these idiots.

Elena's mother has come to my mother in law's home in Sumy stating that we stole from Duane by charging more than things cost us to buy. She demanded that we give her $200US, the value she believes we received for the gifts, since it is money really belongs to her daughter Elena.

WHAT PLANET DO THESE PEOPLE LIVE ON!!!!!!

Then Elena's mother returns a second time a tells my mother in law she has until the following Monday to give her the $200US plus an amount of money equal to any money paid us by Duane, including his trip, all gifts and translation services or they would go to the local papers and the police and tell them our agency is a scam.

again WHAT PLANET DO THESE PEOPLE LIVE ON!!!!!!

I've spoken with Duane about all of this and can you believe he is offering apologies to us? What a great man. But both Duane and our Agency are victims here. As intelligent and exposed to this whole industry as we are we are not immune from being hit.

My poor lovely wife hasn't slept in days. First just because she was terribly upset for Duane. He is a great guy that thought everything was wonderful only to have this woman turn psychotic on him and steal his money. And now because Irena's parents have to deal with this woman and her family. Irena wants to get on a plane right now and kick her ass! (Don't tell her I wrote that :-/ )

So what's the moral of this story? Who the heck knows. All I can tell you is that I haven't been this mad in quite a long time. And trust me anyone that knows me well enough will tell you it takes one hell of an event to disturb my peaceful ignorance.
